De Rust, Klein Karoo

Nestled between the Swartberg and Kammanasie mountain ranges, De Rust is a quaint Victorian village with the most spectacular views in the Klein Karoo. It is situated at the Southern entrance to Meiringspoort, the portal between the Little Karoo and the Great Karoo.

Here you can enjoy hiking trails, cycling tracks, stargazing, horse riding, bird watching and fresh water fishing. Take a walk with giraffes, visit an ostrich farm or go for a mountain pool swim at the famous Meiringspoort Waterfall. Explore the wine route in this area that is famous for its tradition of exceptional fortified wines and be treated to some of the country’s finest cuisine drawing on the rich country traditions of the area. Farming activities in the environs include ostriches, olives, almonds, pomegranates, figs, lamb and vegetable seed production. De Rust has, over the years, become a haven for artists because of its charm and inspiring natural setting.

At Doornkraal, enfolded by the foothills of the Swartberge, we’ve been making wine since the late 1800’s. This is what the farm has become famous for, but we also cultivate lucern, vegetable seed and pastures for sheep, cattle, pigs and horses.

Doornkraal has always had horses. We have relied on them for many generations and the 140 years that this farm has been in care of the Le Roux family. And although horses are not used anymore in daily farming activities, they remain loved and trusted companions. We highly value a good temperament, willingness and kindness towards people in a riding horse.

Therefore DOORNKRAAL HORSES are carefully selected from various bloodlines of South African horses that were bred for local conditions – the legendary Cape Riding Horse, Boerperd and Nooitgedachter – known for their outstanding temperament, versatility, riding comfort and sure-footedness.

The big variety of routes were selected to introduce riders to the breathtaking and unspoilt Klein Karoo landscape. Duration of rides is from 1½ hours to multi-day guided adventures. We accommodate riders of all ages and skill levels. So, what are you waiting for?
